Shortly after the public announcement of the closure of Oregon College of Art and Craft, many alumni came together in community to discuss ways we could ensure a vibrant and connected alumni alliance as we advance. A hope that surfaced, again and again, was to host alumni shows and exhibitions.
We are excited to see that hope becoming a reality through our connection with Disjecta Contemporary Art Center. Disjecta hosted the final two OCAC BFA thesis shows, the 2019 show featuring the last graduating class to work in the OCAC studios, and the 2020 virtual show by students graduating through the teach-out partnership with PNCA.
OCAC had contracted with Disjecta for three years at the time of the school’s closure, and the AOCACA board made a bid with Disjecta to take over the third year of that contract. Disjecta offers a spacious, contemporary space that makes the perfect backdrop to showcase OCAC alumni work.
We hope this exhibition will be the first of many to come and offer a feeling of re-connection among alumni. Disjecta is an esteemed partner to help us with that aim. They are the Portland Biennial hosts which was originally a Portland Art Museum institution, and host to regional, national, and international art collectives such as GLEAN and Converge 45.
Disjecta also offers an outdoor courtyard that will allow us to host events during the exhibition, helping ease any COVID-19 indoor capacity concerns. In addition to the exhibition, there will be art activities, workshops, and presentations taking full advantage of Disjecta’s gallery and outdoor space, giving rise to the show’s name: Share, Learn, Show.
The quality and number of applications we’ve received so far are of no surprise. We thank everyone who has applied!
Due to how many of our timelines have slowed down over the last year, we’ve extended the application deadline, keeping the application period open until April 15th. All information to apply is on our website.
We also encourage you to think about presenting or teaching during the show. We are open to proposals!
We’re looking forward to seeing you this summer!
